Mariah Carey is finding herself in the middle of a mini-controversy that she did nothing to create in the first place. The 47-year-old music legend appeared Monday on ITV’s Good Morning Britain to promote her UK Christmas tour that is scheduled for December.
The mother of two was interviewed by co-hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid and things went south very quickly. The talented diva was lounging awkwardly on her sofa in Los Angeles speaking to the TV personalities in London via satellite.
We told Mariah's people before the interview.
Her reaction seemed very relevant given she's a performer who often has residence in Vegas. https://t.co/6sVMSUMvHK— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) October 2, 2017
The Christmas tree behind Carey rapidly became a hot topic on social media because viewers were wondering why it was placed there since summer only ended about ten days ago. The “Touch My Body” artist also did not appear to be in top form; the time difference was probably a factor.
The horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas was unfolding and Morgan, a gun control enthusiast, did not find anything better than to bring up the topic to a pop superstar who seemed unprepared at best to tackle such divisive subject. Carey tried to answer the questions in general terms, but the whole exchange left a nasty taste for some commenters on the networking channels.
Horrified to hear about the shooting in #LasVegas. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. Praying for everyone's safety 🙏💔

Most people have the impression that Mr. Morgan was looking for an embarrassing moment that could go viral. The former CNN host, who is considered very controversial in some quarters, defended his approach on Twitter after he was blasted for giving a bad name to journalists with such extreme behavior.
Mr. Morgan said that Carey’s team was aware of what was happening in Las Vegas, and therefore, she was not being blindsided by the exchange. The British commentator also defended Carey’s answer and called it elegant.
The pop vocalist did release a statement later in the day, but the moment dominated social media for hours. The vicious attack killed 59 people and left close to 530 others injured.
